What We Do
Neurodegenerative Diseases
We actually hear with our brain, so a lot of our hearing research is also considered brain research. Brain health and hearing loss are often correlated and blast waves cause hearing loss as well as concussive injuries to the brain. That’s why it was a natural progression for our research to branch into neuroscience.
HEI began investigating the effects of blast damage on both peripheral (ears) and central (brain) pathways. These studies revealed a remarkable therapeutic benefit of our “protection pill” against the accumulation of injury biomarkers in the brain. In addition, this therapeutic technology showed promise reducing a highly toxic injury protein in the brain. The protein, pathologic tau, plays a role in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and a host of other degenerative brain diseases.
